The Best Way to Befriend a Ghoul

(got bored and started writing a lil bit of fiction....i will probably forget about this...oops)

I heaved the stone slab off of the sarcophagus with a grunt of effort, then raised my flashlight and peered somewhat nervously over the edge. Uneven steps stretched down into the gloom. I took a deep breath, straightened my tie, clambered over the side, and took the first step. Then the second. And then the third. This was gonna be a long night.

After what felt like an interminably long amount of time, a stone doorway loomed out of the darkness. The beam of my flashlight played over the lintel, revealing a bas-relief carving of an axe-wielding man, ensnared by twisting vines. Nature's fury wrought on a would-be destroyer. This was definitely the right place.

Beyond the doorway, rough-hewn stone pillars stretched up and out of sight. The floor was cobbled, and empty torch sconces dotted the walls. The smell of earth hung heavy in the air. The far end of the room was dominated by a stone statue of an androgynous figure, kneeling in a circle of flowers. A blindfold covered their eyes.

As I drew closer, it became apparent that they had once been holding something in their cupped hands, which were now empty. The sapling I thought. I drew my notebook from my knapsack, flipping through bookmarks until my hand came to rest on the page I was looking for : "Notes on the Verdant Order".
